Ram 392 Quick Silver Debuts at SEMA

by Jerry Smith on Thursday, November 3, 2011 08:00

Ever since Dodge discontinued the Viper V-10-powered Dodge Ram SRT-10, truck fans have been waiting for its replacement. Well, the wait might be over. The new Ram 392 Quick Silver debuts at the SEMA show this week (November 1-4), and it looks like just the truck to take back the title of the world’s fastest pickup.

Under the Quick Silver’s aluminum hood is a very quick engine, a 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 that puts out a claimed 470 horsepower, more than enough to haul just about any payload short of an oil tanker. Standard equipment includes a cold-air intake, a cat-back exhaust system, and headers with an electronically controlled cutout (Hey, everybody, wake up! I’m home!) Brakes are by Brembo, and feature 15-inch rotors and six-piston calipers.

The Quick Silver is painted––what else?––silver, with a gloss black roof and red anodized wheels, mirrors, and grille inserts. All exterior lights hide behind tinted covers, and the suspension has been modified for an additional 2 inches of ride-height reduction.

If the Quick Silver turns out to be anything like its first iteration, that “World’s Fastest Pickup” trophy will be on its way back to Ram HQ very soon.

Camaro Hot Wheels Concept Car Shows @ SEMA

by Jerry Smith on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 05:00

Just because you got older doesn’t mean you have to grow up. If you grew up playing with Hot Wheels, Chevy has a blast from the past for you––the Camaro Hot Wheels concept car.

Based on the “Custom Camaro,” a 1:64-scale toy that was part of the original 16 Hot Wheels cars released in 1968, the project was a collaborative effort between the General Motors Design studio in Michigan and the Hot Wheels Design studio in California.

The Camaro was the first Hot Wheels ever produced, and sparked several generations of daydreams about growing up and getting a real one. The Hot Wheels concept even has a chrome-style finish that mimics the original metallic Spectraflame paint finishes.

Along with numerous styling licks that celebrate the Hot Wheels theme––ghosted Hot Wheels logos on the quarter panels, a ZL1 grille with Hot Wheels badging, and Hot Wheels cut-and-sew embroidered logos in the front seatbacks––the car is equipped with an all-aluminum 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 backed by the Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission, lowered suspension, and Brembo brakes.

Since it’s a concept car you probably shouldn’t break open your piggy bank any time soon, but you can get a collector’s edition 1:64-scale model based on the full-size Concept. Purchase information is available at www.hotwheelscollectors.com, as well as the Hot Wheels and Chevrolet Camaro Facebook pages.

Hyundai Genesis Hurricane SC Debuts at SEMA

by Jerry Smith on Friday, October 14, 2011 08:00

It wasn’t that long ago that Hyundai constantly had to remind everyone its name rhymed with Sunday. But now that the Korean carmaker is firmly established as a manufacturer, it’s making a new name for itself in the performance segment with cars like the Genesis Hurricane SC, set to debut at the 2011 SEMA show in Las Vegas, November 1-4.

The Genesis Hurricane SC is a special-edition prototype Genesis Coupe designed by Hyundai America Technical Center Inc. (HATCI) with help from Magnuson Products, Rhys Millen Racing, Harman International, and Torvec Inc.  Under the hood is a supercharged 3.8-liter V-6 engine with a liquid-to-air intercooler, producing more than 450 horsepower.

Hyundai's long-standing racing partner Rhys Millen Racing (RMR) provided exterior enhancements including a front bumper, grille, hood, side skirts, diffuser and rear deck with spoiler. RMR partners Enkei and Hankook provided the high performance 19-inch wheel and tire assemblies. An RMR free-flowing exhaust system and air intake free up more engine power. The vehicle also sports upgraded LED headlights and taillights provided by FlyRyde. More...

Fox Marketing’s 500-Horsepower Honda Civic

by Jerry Smith on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 08:00

If you haven’t made plans yet to attend the SEMA show in Las Vegas beginning November 1, you might want to clear your calendar. Among the tasty cars, trucks, and accessories on display will be a 2012 Honda Civic Coupe built by Fox Marketing. But this isn’t your average tuner car, with flared fenders and fat wheels and not much else. The Fox Civic’s payoff is under the hood––a turbocharged engine that puts out 500 horsepower.

Some skeptics are already pointing out that putting a 500-horsepower engine in a front-wheel-drive car isn’t likely to do much more than reduce the front tires to rubber dust every few thousand miles. But while that might be true, it’s also fair to point out that who cares?! We’re talking supercar power here, folks! In a Civic!

The Fox Civic will also be getting upgraded suspension and brakes to handle the kind of cornering forces that much power will help generate. After all, with great power comes great responsibility, including the responsibility to keep from wrapping your car around a tree. More...

SEMA: Auto Show for Real Car Guys

by Jerry Smith on Thursday, January 20, 2011 05:25

Forget what your mom, your dad, and your teachers said about becoming a doctor or a lawyer. The business to be in is the automotive industry. Why? Two words: SEMA shows.

SEMA is the Specialty Equipment Market Association, and every year it puts on a huge show that spotlights the newest, coolest, and trickest cars, parts, and accessories that you and your buddies will be drooling over all year––until the next show brings even more.

Strolling up and down the aisles you’ll see paddle shifters for new Camaros, weight-saving aluminum radiators, high-performance intake kits and exhaust systems, and more alloy wheels than you can shake a dipstick at. Suspension kits, sway bars, springs, shocks and struts. Tires for drifting, drag racing, and track days. Trim kits, dress-up parts, and car-care products. It’s like walking through every auto parts store and speed shop in America at once.

And the cars? No matter what form your four-wheel addiction takes, whether street rods, sport compacts, trucks, luxury and exotic cars, racing, or off-road, there’s something there for you. Concept cars, one-offs, next year’s models, they’re all there, and probably all the parts to make your car look just like them, too. The SEMA show is where manufacturers like to pull the wraps off their latest models, and the people who are there to see them get the scoop before anyone else.

But here’s the catch. SEMA membership, and admission to the show, is open only to car manufacturers, importers, and builders, and people who work in, for, and around the car business. Which means, sadly, probably not you.

But don’t worry. The next SEMA show takes place November 1-4 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. That leaves you plenty of time to drop out of medical school, get a job at Krazy Karl’s Kar Kare Klinic, and save up for a SEMA membership of your own.
